Using and Choosing Infrared Security Cameras

Capturing images in low or no light settings is next to impossible with conventional cameras.  However, infrared security cameras, or night vision cameras, are ideal for overnight security needs because they can “see” in the dark.  These cameras also work during the light, capture color images, but at night, they switch to infrared mode to capture black and white images in the dark.  However, these are not the same as day and night cameras, which do not have built-in infrared lights.

Infrared cameras may be used both indoors and outdoors.  However, if you intend to use an outdoor security camera, weatherproof bullet style cameras rather than dome style cameras typically work best.  Indoor cameras in an outdoor housing do not work as well since the infrared light reflects off the glass of outdoor housing.  Furthermore, a bullet camera can see a fairly good distance.  Some cameras even exceed 100 feet of visibility even in the dark.  You should keep in mind that even if there is no artificial light around, there is usually some natural light from the moon and/or stars.

Businesses that keep low lights on overnight typically use infrared cameras as an adequate security measure.  While bullet style cameras may be the best choice for outside use, dome style cameras may be sufficient for indoor needs, as they will not have a glare from glass housing.  Like an outdoor camera, an indoor camera requires no light to capture an image, so you will be able to see if an intruder wanders around in the dark.  In either case, you want to find a camera with a low lux because the lower the lux, the better the ability to capture an image in low light.

One factor you should consider before investing in infrared security cameras is that they usually require more power than other cameras.  Still, it may be worth the investment to have a camera that senses when the light gets low enough to switch modes between day and night visions.  The cameras themselves may be fairly inexpensive with many of them costing only around $50.  However, you may want to look into an entire security system that includes closed circuit television or DVR capabilities.  Cameras with pan, tilt and zoom capabilities are also available and may cost more than static cameras.  With these options, you are bound to find the right camera to fit your security needs.
